Anyone see the film Dune? Yes well, its not that similar to Blade Runner (except Sean Young)but...

the soundtrack is, kinda. The music you hear when you first see Chani (Mrs Young's charicter) is rather like some of the music you hear in Blade Runner, I think mainly when reachel is talking to Deckard before the Love Theme kicks in. I'm not say that Toto (who wrote the Dune music) are plagerist, I'm just wondering if they were continueing a Sean Young 'theme' from Vangalis...

Interesting! I can't say I have ever noticed it, but I will definitely pay attention to it next time I see Dune.

Btw, what do you think to the new Dune film (mini series), "Frank Herbert's Dune" with William Hurt? It's more just to the novel, but I think David Lynch's interpretation is much much more enjoying to watch.

Now this topic I can really get into! I've posted a couple of topics about Dune in the past, but never got a response from anyone in the forum, so I just figured there weren't many Dune fans here and dicided to just drop the subject.

First of all, I absolutely love the Dune soundtrack! Especially the love theme (for Chini and Paul)and end title theme. I wouldn't be surprised to find a musical similarity between the Deckard/Racheal and Chani/Paul scene. I'll have to go back and compare them.

One thing that blows my mind is that Ridely was approched and asked to do the Dune movie way before he was asked to direct BR. He turned it down because he thought the project would take too long. Imagine, had he done Dune, he would've never done BR! I think David Lynch did a great job, but I would love to have seen Dune directed by Ridely.

As for the Dune mini series: I personally was dissapointed. Yes, it did follow the book and told the story more accurately, but it didn't capture the "essence" of the Dune universe like the movie did and as discribed in the book. The Harkonan's, for instance, are filthy, perverted, brutal, and down right nasty! The movie captured that. In the mini series they were way too clean cut and domesticated. But I guess since it was to air on TV, the producers had some restrictions. Moreover, I think the choice actors and the acting was better in the movie.

In one of my old Dune posts I asked if anyone knew if there were going to release a special edition Dune in 2004 (for its 20th aniversary). I really think they should being that there is about an hour or so of extra footage that can currently only be seen on a boot-leg video, a two disc region 2 Japanese vcd, or whenever it air on the Sci-Fi channal.

Well, sorry to ramble so much on the topic, but as you can now guess, the Dune univers (movies, books, and PC games) is one of my greatest passions after Blade Runner.

I have a copy of the Japanese video with the extra Dune footage you mentioned. It is about 20 minutes longer (if I remember correctly) than the original version of Dune. I've heard that this version was created for foreign TV broadcast and was reworked to be less confusing to the average viewer. There is an extensive prolog at the beginning which gives viewers more insight into the Dune universe. It includes a few deleted scenes that are interesting but in my opinion don't really add a lot to the story. One thing that is telling about this version is the fact that David Lynch had his name removed from the credits, the director is listed as Alan Smithee.

I think I have seen this version (20 min extra) on a DVD in a store once. I noticed it because it had a different cover than the DVD I have, and I also was puzzled by the additional length of it. Why I didn't buy it...one can only ask the gods. The strange thing is that I have not seen this dvd since. Could I have been dreaming it
..I get a sudden Vanilla Sky feeling.

Anyway, lets talk more about the mini-series. Some of the scenes in the Fremen village looks like a theater setting! I know that it had a limited budget, but come on...it looks terrible.
And another thing, the change from day to night is done in less than 5 seconds, check it out the next time you watch it. Again this reminds me of a typical thing you would do in a theater, just switch from a yellow to a blue spot light filter.
No, this version can't even be compared to David Lynch's one.

Also, what I really loved about the Lynch version, is the whispering thoughts voice overs, if you know what I mean. And this is also in done in the book, but not in the mini-series.

And another ridiculous effect in the mini, is the desert mouse thing, the Muad'dib, it is so lame, it looks like a hand puppit.
Even though this is in accordance with the book, I like the way Lynch did it, and called the shadow on the second moon Muad'dib instead.

Wow, I did a lot of slaughtering of the mini here, but when I saw it, I kept comparing it the movie and was extremely disappointed. But maybe when I see it again, I will try to keep the mini and the movie separate.

---
"Father, the sleeper has awakend." <))

I've never seen the mini series!

So, about the film. I have two vertions, one which it the cinima edit, which is about 2 and a quester hours long, and has the Emporer's daughter giveing the prologue, and I also have the TV edit on DVD, which is 3 hours long and has a differnt prolouge alltogether (by Brain Herbet I belive).
I think that they should do a Dune Se, but something akin to thew Star Wars SEs, with better graphics (and better sound...).
As for the soundtrack, its not up to BR soundtrack. my fav track is 'big battle', when the snare drums build up and the guitars come in and the end... marvelous.

Wilkins Rep, if you haven't read the book, I REALLY suggest you do! It's awesome reading. The story line is way too deep to tell in the movie, or even in the mini-series for that matter. Just about everyone that sees the movie walks away a bit confuse if they have not read the book.

As for the movie, the version with extra footage is a lot longer than just 20 minutes. The Japanese 2 disc vcd (which I have) is the longest version out there. It's 3hrs and 9 minutes long, where as the theatrical version is only 2hrs and 17 min.

The Japanese version (that plays in English with the option of Japanese sub-titles) does have the longer intro that expains a lot more of what's going on in the Dune universe and some scenes are longer, but it also has entire deleted sequences such as:
When Paul fights Janus with the crysnife and they later incinerate Janu's body, when the maid attemps to kill Lady Jessica, and when the Fremen draw the "water of life" from the baby worm.

All in all, a Special Edition should be made because although the film is available on dvd, it hasn't been digitally remastered. I can only hope that with the airing of the mini-series last year and the current realease of the final Dune prequel books, that something is in the making.

[ This Message was edited by: endzem on 2002-05-16 17:02 ]
