How long would you last in LA 2019?

I think we all find BR's LA 2019 very attractive, although it is a "Dystopia" (Greek for "a bad place"). Why do we like it so much (apart from the techonology like the spinners)? how long would any of us last in that type of environment? Although I am the "Dystopian Resident" I think I would like the experience of living in that kind of environment for no more than 3 days. How many days would you like to reside there for?<BR><BR>

The question really depends on the situation; would you like to live there if you were homeless? Would you like to live there if you had, say, Tyrells wealth? Either way, I sure would like to experience a Spinner ride. <IMG SRC="/forum/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">

One thing to consider here is that, for most of the citizens of Los Angeles in 2019, they didn't have much choice in where they lived or what sort of living conditions they had. Supposedly, life off-world was much more desirable, but one had to be physically and mentally fit and, one assumes, rather wealthy to be able to succeed off-world.<BR><BR>Personally, I wouldn't like such an environment. If I had no choice, I would make it just fine. After all, what would be the alternative?

Facing up to crowds of people crammed into public transport. Tall buildings housing the wealthy corporations. Neon signs in places advertising canned promises. A huge diverse mixture of cultures. Nightclubs where you can see exotic dancers. Occasionally a blimp flying overhead displaying its corporate message. Some people living alone depsite the masses, while others go about whatever business they have, even when it involves obscure supplies for strange needs.<BR><BR>Oh, hang on, that all describes London. I wouldn't mind the LA 2019 as long as I can have my sweet 'n sour cantonese chicken and fried rice. Every day. <BR>But I think you would end up pretty depressed in that environment. Too many people, too much ignorance, not enough respect. You'd end up like Deckard.

I'd manage to establish myself as a liquor merchant. That'be sure money in that deppressing city.

I think as humans, we would adapt to the situation as we would any other. Thats all i can really say.

I lived in the Hollywood and Cahuenga Blvd area for two years and downtown LA for a bit. Even though I love the film, actually living in downtown LA like near skid row, (then with rain) would grow very tiresome. You must watch your back every moment like being in combat. Think of it on guard every moment. So yes it's kind of romantic (did I say that?) But to actually live in it is something else, it wears you down. <BR><BR>But I do agree that if that is all you know then you do your best to cope, because if you're not a cop you're little people.

Hey BRmovie you also described New York, Tokyo, and Hong Kong. I have to agree with some of the other people who have replied. If we lived in 2019 we wouldn't think about it much one way or the other, as a matter of fact if we were living in that time period we would very likely be saying, god I wouldn't want to have lived in the 20th Century, or at the beginning of the 21st because they didn't have any of the modern conveniences we do. So I think it's all perspective.

Certainly it would be exciting at first, but for me I think the crowds and the atmosphere will start to get on your nerves. Id say if you survived for at least a couple years of LA2019 (I think) a person would start to get indifferent and cold towards everything, you simply may not care about anything happening around you (environment, crowds, crimes, shootings, riots). You'd just care about how to get through your own day in one piece.<BR><BR>If you were rich and still resided in LA2019, that would be a different story. You probably wouldn't have to deal with any of the situations a "normal" person would have to face in the city. THe buildings these people would be so huge they would never have to go out into the real world. The rich would get everything they want where they lived.
