Okay, here's a interesting scenario:

What if it had been Deckard and not Holden that was sent to VK Leon at Tyrell. Do you think Leon would've caught Deckard by surprise just like he did Holden? Or do you think Deckard would've had some kind of instinct or "gut felling" that would've kept him alive?

Hi Endzem. Simple. Deckard would be killed and Dave Holden would be the main character.
sorry...the temptation was too great!

_________________
~GENE~

[ This Message was edited by: Gene Ettix on 2001-09-05 17:33 ]

Endzem writes:
"Or do you think Deckard would've had some kind of instinct or "gut felling" that would've kept him alive?"

Dave replies:

I tend to doubt it. After all, look at how Leon surprised him in th street and nearly killed him if it were not for Rachel. He didn't fare too well against Roy either. Pris surprised him too, but he was lucky enough to get off a god shot at her. Zhora nailed him as well. If someone had not broken into her dressing room at that moment, she would have killed him.
That's true, Dave, but on all those occasions I think Deckard couldn't help but be surprised: Leon poped out of nowhere, Deckard couldn't keep his eyes off Zora's boobs, Pris blended in very well with the other dolls, ect.

I think Leon's response to the turtle VK question should've been a red flag. Holden was overworked and too cocky. He just went on to the next question. I think Deckard, on the other hand, might've ended the test there, or stood up in order to be in a less vulerable spot, or perhaps even pull a Han Solo (when he shot Guido) and shot Leon under that table.
I think that the Nexus 6 models were pretty much capable of "getting the drop" on anybody they wanted to. Deckard, although a "one-man slaughterhouse" in Bryant's words, had gotten older, more jaded, and had lost his enthusiasm for the job. All of those reasons, coupled with the advanced design of the Nexus 6, pretty much put him at a disadvantage. In my opinion, the man got lucky.

All four of the Reps could easily have killed Deckard, so if he had been in Holden's place, he would probably have got shot. (Holden didn't die though.)

It didn't help that Holden was getting bored - it is implied that he had already interviewed a number of people and the whole thing was just on the off-chance that a Rep might have joined Tyrell Corp recently.

Ultimately though, the Blade Runners have simply underestimated the capabilities of these Nexus 6 Replicants. Even if Deckard had been more on the ball than Holden, he still wouldn't have been fast enough.
I rewatched 'On the Edge of Blade Runner' the other day.

In the hospital scene Holden tells Deckard that he VK'd 26 employees before he got to Leon - he was probably bored and/or tired by that point...

Something I noticed the last time I saw BR that I hadn't noticed before: After Holden get's shot, the scene where you see him slam againt a desk (just before it cuts to the Asian billboard) you notice Holden is holding a gun. So I guess he DID suspect something and tried to get ready, but just wasn't fast enough.

"My mother? Let me tell you about my mother."

Bang, oops you've got a big hole in your chest. The same thing would have happened to Deckard, who was also going through the motions this early in the narrative.

This one I find pretty simple:

Leon is intellegent (atleast as intellegent as the genetic designers who created him). He smells a rat and knows he is in danger.

Deckard is not some hyper intellegent being, unless of course he is a replicant which still does not grant him ESP.

Leon gives no hint of violence, as mentioned before he says simply says "let me tell you about my mother" and shoots.

If Deckard was in Holdens place he too would have been through 26 interviews thus this is a moot point

All of the above = Deckard gets shot just like Holden did.

Paul

Deckard would have shot Leon first otherwise Blade Runner would have been a very short film...

...yes, I know that was a stupid answer, but I'm in a stupid sort of mood...

In any case, the interviewer should skip the "mother" question. You wouldn't want me to talk about yo'momma either.
It's a sure way to p!ss someone off.Especially if,like Leon,you don't even have one.

thing is, the question wasn't an offencive one. "Tell me, in single words, only the good things about you mother". The only reason that Leon would have some trouble would be because he doesn't have one. The question itself is not offencive, seeing as it looks for positives.

Secondly, just wanted some quick clarification: Does Leon have implanted memories? (the reason he would want his "precious Photos") because themn he would (although he knew he was a rep) have a memory of his mother and find no problem

Paul

[ This Message was edited by: Paul G on 2002-01-10 06:36 ]

My understanding is that only Rachael has implanted memories (and Deckard if you subscribe to the theory that he his also a Rep - as I do).
Remember Deckard's conversation with Tyrell after VK'ing Rachael:
Deck: "How can it not know what it is?"
(If you believe Deckard is a Rep then you'll enjoy the irony of that question)
Tyrell: "Rachael is an experiment, nothing more."..."If we give them the past we create a cushion for their emotions and consequently we can control them better."
Deck: "You're talking about memories"..
(BTW, that was from my memory - no pun intended)
My own theory is that perhaps Leon's frustration is magnified by the fact that he has a set of photos (probably phoney and created by Tyrell Corp) but not the set of memories to go with them - probably because Tyrell Corp are only just starting to perfect the implant process on Rachael and Deckard.
