Myself and 6 other friends were in attendance the night of the Dallas sneak preview. My friends and I recall how the
Holden vs Leon scene ended with something different from any other subsequent version. And there has never been
any mention of the alternate scene in any interview or publication I can dig up, including Future Noir. People think I
am crazy when I describe the different shots, but what the seven of us remember was, firstly, Leon firing more shots
at Holden- sadistically blasting away- seemed like there were at least 2 more shots fired. And all versions since show
that scene ending with an abrupt cut to exterior, just as Holden slams into a desk. But we recall another, final,
lingering shot of Holden slumped motionless over the typewriter. His back was blown open, smoking... and you could
see what appeared to be metal, cybernetic prosthetics under the meaty holes in his backside! In discussions
following, our assumption was that Holden was in a dangerous job and either had replacement or enhancement
surgery at some point in the past, resulting from some accident- just another interesting piece of detail in a movie
filled with excruciating bits of futuristic detail.

But over the years, having viewed every subsequent version ever released theatrically or on video, these additional
shot have never resurfaced. Nor can I find any mention of them anywhere. So where the hell did they go?!? A year
or so after the first run of Bladerunner, I remember one of my friends telling that he had read somewhere that the
shot of the wounded Holden was cut short, as it appears now, because producers found that the 'Holden as robotic'
suggestion was adding to the confusion reported by many preview audience members, in the little questionnaires that
were handed out. Apparently some people (assumedly not paying attention) were confused that the nature of
replicants was mechanical, and had wondered why one of the detectives was also a replicant (and not Deckard as
many like to speculate). Seemed to be just another one of the infamous, misguided alterations that the studio saw
fit to inflict on Bladerunner. Now, does anyone else out there remember this scene?

Sounds very strange considering its never been mentioned before and a scene with Holden hooked up in the hospital was shot then of course cut..sure you're not describing a dream?

_________________

[ This Message was edited by: The Dark Knight on 2003-04-11 06:19 ]

Yes, strange that in all the puplications, all the interviews and all the talk about Blade Runner no one has ever heard of this before...

oooh, how odd?

There was an extended shot of shot Holden in the workprint. Future Nior describes this shot:

Quote:

WP includes longer shot of Holden slumped over computer, face resting on keyboard. A smokeing hole is visable in Holden's back in the WP; also, the blades of a ceiling fan which have fallen down over him brush Holden's hair.

p.395 of Future Nior.

This extended shot is almost identicle to the one you describe, and so it is obvious that it is not a 'forgotton shot', and that there was no circuits in Holden's back. It could of been one of those made-up scenes (like the scene of Deckard getting his hand fixed after the fight with Roy, which had the word 'REPLICANT' flashing up on the medi-screen [this shot was made up and it never existed, it was only a rumour].).

_________________

"Me fail english? Well, I dont know how seven of us could have had the same dream. Am aware of the cut 'Holden in hospital' scene, which I have a still from. Am emailing the stuntman who actually did the scene to see what he remembers.

Maybe what you saw were the wires for the explosives squib. That would be why they were cut out as well. The early screenings you talked about were showing workprints or rough draft edits with more visible flaws...than even the wires hanging the spinner:)

I have a copy of the workprint. I just watched the scene in question. It is pretty much as Mr. Sammon describes. After Holden is blown through the wall there is an extra shot where he slams into a desk and his head hits a computer keyboard. One of the overhead fans has fallen on the desk but continues to rotate touching his hair as each blade passes. On about the mid-point of Holden's back there is quite a lot of smoke coming from a frayed hole in the jacket. There is no evidence of any wires or mechanisms protruding from the hole, but when I first watched it, the shape of the frayed hole made it appear that there was some sort of small box under the fabric. Repeated veiwings showed this to be just a trick of the light combined with the way the fabric was frayed.

Memory is a tricky thing. I used to swear that the original theatrical release had a cut-away shot to an old Victrolla when "One More Kiss Dear" is first played. I can still remember it vividly, even though I know now it never existed.

I don't recall seeing that Bousley. I'll have to check on the film archives first.

Wish I had the Workprint..without having seen it I don't feel like a true Blade Runner fanatic.

From Morgan Paull:
"As far as all this goes, smoke yes, shrapnel or metal no. I was watching the stuntman in my scene both live and on Ridley's monitor."

I emailed Morgan Paul's fan site about the mysterious scene. The site seemed vacant and was not sure if I would get any response. But an assistant replied, who was gracious enough to forward the comment to Morgan Paul.

Hmmm, this is very interesting.

I've always felt that the last image of this scene ended too quickly, and it just seemed like the editor cut it too short after Holden got shot.

It never looked quite right to me.
