Deckard and smoking

Is there any indication that Deckard is, like several other characters in the movie, a cigarette smoker? If I remember correctly, when Deckard bends over to pick up the photo that Rachael dropped before fleeing his apartment, there is what looks like a stubbed-out cigarette lying on the floor.

Deckard is a depressed slob. I don't think that he smokes. There is no indication that he smokes, other than that supposed stubbed out cigarette, and because he is a slob that may be nothing more than a piece of garbage. I've noticed something about smokers (because my brother is one) They are very social with their smoking. Whenever someone leaves the room to have a cigarette break, every smoker in the room leaves for a cigarette break.

So maybe he is a smoker, but seeing as how most of the main crew (including the writer?) are smokers, I don't think this little detail would be left out.

Judging from how he acts in the movie, and the fact that we never see him smoke, I'm going to go ahead and say he's not a smoker.

I have a feeling that the Ridley wanted him to be a smoker but Harrison refused. Maybe he is a "reformed" smoker. I do swear there are ashtrays in his apartment. Maybe his ex-wife smoked and he just hasn't cleaned since she left. Oh I forgot , only those that saw the origional cuts knew he had a wife.

Not to be a prick...but the whole ex-wife thing was created solely for the VO.

I remember a quote where Ford was getting sick of dealign with the cigars in a certain scene and suggested that Scott should be hung from his balls.

I believe this was from Future Noir.

That was actually Emmet Walsh that was getting sick of the cigars. He didnt like the way the juices set in his mouth and dribbled down his throat, if I remember right. But the haning Ridley Scott by the testicles part you remembered correctly.

Deckard appears to be moving an ashtray while "cleaning up" prior to taking off his coat during Rachael's first visit. My guess is that he's a recent ex-smoker, drowning the nicotine habit in booze. Although why anybody living in 2019 LA would see much benefit from quitting smoking is beyond me (check out the haze in his apartment during the "You think I'm a replicant, don't you?" line).

Yeah, that's what I had read. Thanks.

Was that from FN? I can't recall.

Well yes, he was married in the book.

I meant in Director's cut.

I guess that was my point, or what I realized when I said it...Depending on which version you saw first you would think different things (Sounds like dejavu ). I don't think anybody who came in post DC would think he ever had a wife.
