How do you say his name correctly? Is it Van-gelis with a hard G and short E. Or is it Vang-gelis, or Van-jelis? Anyone know for sure?

I've always pronounced it Van-gelis.

I've heard his name pronounced both "VAN JEL LIS" and "VAN GEL LIS", although I believe that the latter pronunciation is more common (or perhaps even correct).

In Future Noir, Paul Sammon says it's pronounced with a hard "g" as in "get".
O.K. The last post here was in January with no real answer to this question. I've been in Europe since the first week in February with this in mind since I've become very interested in this man and his music.
My research paid-off, and I've learned some kewl trivia that I want to share with my fellow BR/Vangelis fans. If you are curious as to how I came upon this info, I can elaborate later, but I won't bore you with that now. sadik - You should find this interesting as I know you are from Greece, same as Vangelis. Here's the scoop:
Vangelis is a shortened version of his first name. It's really Evangelis with his nickname being Evan. The G does have the hard G sound, with the S at the end being silent making the last part pronounced "lee". The accent is on "gel".
I hope I'm describing this well enough - kind of difficult online.
His full name is Evangelis Papathaniscimou and had a rock band in the late 60's-early 70's called APHRODITE'S CHILD. I'm not sure how many albums they made. One album-cover is completely red with nothing except a big 666 on the front(I hear laughter from smendrick666 )
Well, that's all for now. I've been excited to share this with my fellow Reps & `Runners. Hope it was enlightening

_________________
"Have you ever retired a human by mistake?"

[ This Message was edited by: Gene Ettix on 2002-05-19 19:14 ]

It's like when some people I know mention they are very fond of H.R.Giger, and they spell it like "Jeiger".

Poor lads, they have no idea he's from Switzerland. {full name: Hans Rudi Giger)

I'm sure you're right, BR796164. I asked a friend of mine in Germany to write his name on a piece of paper for me.He did this from memory so evidently he was a little off.Thanx for the correct spelling then.
BTW, I know Giger is Swiss, and how to pronounce his name
As far as Vangelis goes... Many words that are spelled exactly the same, are pronounced differently in different countries. Maybe there is a popular (and correct) way to say his name in America, etc. But, the way I described the pronounciation of Evangelis above is how a person who speaks the Greek language says it.

On the second thought, I am NOT sure with the O in his first name. Perhaps it was just a typo in the article.
Yiu kniw, O and I are near each ither in the keyboard.
