I read that Dustin Hoffman was maybe going to be cast as Deckard at one point (i think it was in Future Noir).

Obviously Harrison Ford is the best ever Deckard, but what do we think about Hoffman as Deckard?

Personally I think it would have been quite interesting. Hoffman is a bit geekier than Ford. Ford changed Deckard's character, wasn't Deckard originally written as a bespectacled bureaucrat? (That?s the impression I got from ?Do Androids?) Hoffman would have played this type of Deckard well. There is one bit in BR that makes Deckard look like a real looser-wimp, the bit when he climbs the Bradbury building, his trousers are so wet and droopy, he looks like a bit of a loser, but then again, I guess we all would in his situation. Maybe I can sympathize with the bespectacled Deckard, as I?m bespectacled too.

ford isnt the best decakrd, im sure we can find better (though not many)

i would like dustin as deckard. also, future noir did talk about how he did contribute a lot to the story, so some of what you see in BR is from his ideas.

You dont like Harrison as Deckard? For me some other guy is unthinkble, how can one be a hardcore BR fan and not be totally satisfied with the casting?

althoght Ford is amazing, i think it's a little bit far-fetched to say that BR is flawless. Im not say i'd prefer Hoffman, i was asking what we'd think of Hoffman as Deckard. (Think of Hoffman's role in Straw Dogs)[/img]

i didnt say i didnt like him, i just said he isnt the best, or "the best". its not like he's irreplaceable, because he can be replaced with another actor.

I think I would have a hard time with a romance between Sean Young's Racheal and Dustin Hoffman as Deckard. Ford played "world weary" perfectly. Even though he was mainly chosen for his box office draw from Star Wars and Indianna Jones, It is one of his best performances. His character contrasts perfectly with the others. It would have been a different movie with Hoffman and I am pretty sure not better.

Ok, i see your point, for me he is irreplaceable.
I agree with Ridleynoir, in many cases if you change actor you change the movie, atleast imho.

iw as thinking the other day, i saw bill paxton on tv. he (as he is older now) would make a good deckard maybe. michael biehn (kyle reese/corporal hick/coffee from the abyss) would make a good deckard too, that is, in their current older state. in 1982, they were all too young looking to be any kind of deckard.

Its about the voice too.. Michael biehn would not sound good, Paxton.. hmm.. better then Biehn, voice_wize that is..
I acctually like both thoose actors, Aliens and Terminator (they are both in thoose movies) are two of my favorite movies.

(not that i would change a thing in my nr1 movie

Dustin Hoffman as Rick Deckard, in a Ridley Scott production of Blade Runner would have been a VERY different film. It may have been a hit, who knows? It may have changed Dustin Hoffman's entire career. I am willing to bet that we would not be here today talking about the film. I think the impact of the film/character would have been more along the lines of Robert Duvall in THX. Much less iconic.

I can imagine Hoffman walking around in the moody streets and locations of Scott's 2019 LA. I CANNOT imagine him holding his own against a replicant, or running anywhere. I can't picture him playing a character with a deadly edge to him. Using the blaster? No way. Harrison Ford could play that in a glance, a look, a nod. He could give us a wink of something darker. That is what has always made Ford iconic. He can play dangerous.

And world weary? I can see Hoffman doing a guy who looks tired, but is more of a whiner. Kind of a nuerotic whiner, sure. Not the stoic loner that ford portrayed. Hoffman is not an attractive man, and I have never been able to buy him as a leading man/ladies man type.

I could see Gary Oldman as Rick Deckard. The guy is amazing. I guess he'd play the role somewhere in between Hoffman and Ford with his own special twist.

Bill Paxton, not so much. Maybe as Leon.

Michael Beihn? That's an interesting idea. Michael Beihn is getting kind of crazy eyed as he gets older. Could work.

Perhaps its just my imagination at this late hour but... I can really see any of those 3 gentlemen mentioned earlier playing Deckard... but I would especially like to see a present day Paxton. I think that he and Ford share a similar charisma, at least towards some projects.

yeah i dig oldman, although i could see him playing a sinister Deckard, maybe that wouldn't work.
