New here and a couple of questions please.......

I just purchased the directors cut DVD and did not see an alternate ending? :?:
I thought the ending was different? :?:
I have the DVD and have watched both sides-also there is no commentary or extra footage in it that I can see?. :?:
Also
Can some one please tell me what the hell those things are blowing off fire in the opening scene in the city? Curious I have checked a bunch of BR sites and they don't mention it. :?:
Aslo why does everyone smoke?????? Is the atmosphere that bad?

If anyone has ever seen Millenium Cheryl Ladd smokes ciggarettes constantly as the air is too pure for her in the past.

thank you in advance and this looks like a great board for BLADE Runner FANS. 8) :D

The exta footage is of the "unicorn dream" that Deckard has...and the ending in the Director's Cut is just when Deckard and Rachel get into the elevator. The Original Release's ending was of him driving off into the mountianous countryside talking about both of them living out their lives together. Ridley hated that ending...so in the DC version...he cut that out. Plus he cut out the voice over of Deckard....he lothed that most of all. I don't think Ridley did a commentary...course I could be wrong.

The stacks are blowing out fire because they are the factories in production...Los Angeles is full of factories (who knew), lets just say that the future in this is very, very bleak. Over populated, overly corporated, and just generally living in pure hell.

The enviroment is bad (just look at city...that's a big tip off), it's cold, rainy and very polluted.

And everyone smokes because...well...in all the movies that's all anyone ever did. It was supposed to be "cool" and give an air of mystery of the characters...there was no real push to end smoking back at the beginning of the eighties....so it just stands to reason why.
