My Blade Runner Fan Fic

Hey all...mister new guy here. (probably posting in the wrong place as usual...but oh well)

As Roy Batty would say "Gee...you sure do have a lot of neat toys here."

Anyhoo...I've been on a bit of a Fan Fic writing phase and started to create a new BR story with a brand new set of characters. It's not completed so I can't shove it on to your story board (still writing out the chapters), but I've posted a few so far on the fan fiction.net site.

It's set 20 years later from where the movie ended (And forgive my lack of being faithful to the "Do Androids Dream Of Sheep?" novel...it's more based from the movie.) and in the chaotic mega city of New York. I had hoped to write this as a novel, but seeing how it would never get approval, or too many telling me how "unfaithful" to the original I'd probably be...I guess a Fan Fic it will have to be. So give it a try and try not to come back and 'retire' me if you hate it.

I've always thought of New York in the BR universe as erased off from Earth in the war... (Haven't read your fanfic yet).

Wow that was really well done. The main character is going through some tough times alright. You should continue it.

Thanks raymccoy! I probably will continue writing this story out...if only to entertain those that would enjoy it. If you'd like I could keep this thread on here and tell you when the next chapter update is.

Well, I just read what you've written. Keep going man, seems like there's a lot of potential in the storyline. What I did find were some minor I typos: the character is introduced as Derek Mason, but sometimes you refer to him as Manson, and in some places you use the word 'then' in a context in which (as far as I know) the correct word is 'than'. They are minor things anyway, nothing that a thorough revision can't fix once you're done with the writing. In my personal experience (not much) the writing tends to get messed up if you put too much attention to every little spelling and grammar issue while developing the ideas, so don't worry about the typos. I just point them out just for you to know they are there somewhere, so when you finish the story you can go back and correct them. Not that you wouldn't have planned to do it in the first place... well, you get the idea.

As english is second language to me, I might not be enough qualified to analyse/criticize your writing style, though. But I like what you've done so far, despite it departs of my own personal version of the Blade Runner timeline. Good work, keep it up!

Thanks Centauro....

Yeah I know many have told me they have a certain 'vision' of how the Blade Runner universe should be. So it's not the first time I've heard someone say that. Spelling errors and grammar mistakes are bound to happen in writing, but you've pointed them out to me and I thank you for your help. Believe it or not I found some grammar mistakes in one of Arthur C. Clarke's books...and there's a man who loves to write!

I'll try to fix the "Mason - Manson" confusion and try to keep better tabs on my spelling probs. I'm no professional writer by any means...but getting helpful advice and responses like yours helps a lot.

Thanks again!

Chapter 3 is up.

Short chapter maybe...the next one might be a bit longer. But oh well...have a gander.

CHAPTER 3 - Better Than Human And Beyond Human

I've decided to put a hold on this Blade Runner fic of mine. While I do thank many of you who have read the chapters I've placed on it...there's just not enough feedback or interest to make me complete the work. I might go back someday and continue the chapters...but I had higher hopes for this as more of a novel then just a fan fic story. Originally had it in my mind that I could turn this into a book that would get published...but that isn't going to happen mainly because I don't have the rights to do such a thing, I'm mister nobody right now to the writing guild (Companies don't publish lofty writers) and mostly it's just a dream at best. Ah well...if I feel later on that I'll keep it as a fan fic...I'll go back and finish the story.

Right now I'm too busy to stay focused on it. I dunno...what do you all think?

Well... we've seen this happen before, and we'll see this happen again. Don't feel bad, it has happened with online comics, fan fics, collaborative fanfics, websites , and more. I guess you are going to keep writing, so don't give up and focus on things that are your own and have at least a chance to be published. You know that I liked what you had done so far, but it isn't good to keep going with it if your passion for it has died. It becomes more of a burden than a pleasure. And, if I may say it, if you put your heart on something, don't give a XXXX about other's interest or feedback... look at Kevin W. Jeter, he just keeps going no matter what.... In the worst case, the least you will get is more writing experience from it. And in writing it is specially true that practice makes a master.

It's not so much that...(heart not being in it and all)...I just think my goal to see this as a book is pretty much not going to happen. Writers need to build up their work before they get noticed...and fan fics don't count as a credible writing platform (From what I've read on some of the publisher's websites). They (the publishers) need to see that you've done original material and built up a few titles before taking on licenced trademarks. Kevin W. Jeter didn't get to write for Blade Runner until he was established...now he can and has permission to write as many books as he sees fit. (Until the contract finishes that is)

I may take this story and re-develop it into something other then a Blade Runner fic. Change a few details, keep out replicants and not make the lead character a Blade Runner....it still could be possible. I brainstormed on it the other day at work and figured there might be a way to salvage the story into something that mimics the BR universe. I mean lets face it...there are hundreds of titles, movies and anime titles that do the same. So why not try to mold this into a dark futuristic novel of similar stature?

Hmm...I'll have to think about this some more.
