Strange Days? BR of the 90's?

Hiya, little new to this, yet at the same time an old friend. Want some replies preferably, tell me what you think. It's about time, but just saw the movie Strange Times. Shoot me if you will, but in a alternate view, in a different world, is this the BR of the 90's?

Hello and welcome to the board - do you mean Stange Days (1995)? I've seen this movie a couple of times and I don't really see any parallels with Blade Runner - can you elaborate a little?

Strange Days

Absolutely. There are no replicants, obviously, but however, to me at least there seems to be some ties here between the flicks. I meant my first question to the board in a very generalized view, in the fact that BR was a very unprecedented movie in many ways such as effects, characters, character involvment and character emotions. What I am truly trying to say is that in principle, not on actual characters or plots, but in principle this movie has a lot to offer in regards to BR. It is in its own way a cult movie, or at least on its way to becoming one IMHO. It is science fiction, yet has the same undying reality of BR: that these ideas can truly become a reality. Call me a freak, but there is no doubt in my mind that given time, say decades or many decades, a replicant could very well truly exist. Just look at what the MIT robotics program has to offer, or Honda. Honda Robotics, a division (obviously) of Honda Motors arguably has the most advanced robotics knowledge, technology, and working prototypes of anyone in the world. In this sense, mini-DVDs, or whatever they are in SD's, have the same principle in mind. This idea that was put forth by its writer/author could very well become a reality as could BR given time. I guess that is my two cents. Tell me what you think.

Well, what has always impressed me about Blade Runner (and more precisely DADOES) is the way it tackles the issues around AI, or at least asks some questions about the subject. If we create an artificial beings and allow them to develop their own feelings, emotions and moral code then what is the difference between them and a naturally created human being? It really is asking questions about the 'human condition'.

Strange Days (as far as I remember) explores the ideas around recorded memories and the possible use (or misuse) of the technology (have you ever type 'dream catcher' into a search engine?)

I have a very strong idea about the definition of Science Fiction - Blade Runner is certainly science fiction, Star Wars is not (in my opinion) and Strange Days is also Sci-Fi. So, I look at your response and read it like this 'Blade Runner is a very good example of the Sci-fi genre and so is Strange Days' - in which case i am total agreement with you. I will elaborate further if you wish.

Strange Days is a good flick, but it doesn't reach timerless cult heights of BR, methinks. Still, its a good alternative scifi to movies of the kind of Independence day etc and one of the best SF movies of the nineties.
But I think it can be rather called a "technothriller" than pure scifi...

Strange Days is definately rated as one of the few good "cyberpunk" movies(that BR is ofted listed on) and I have always felt it was underated. definately worth seing if you haven't.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that Strange Days had an alternate ending to the one that was finally released that was not such a happy affair (sounds familiar?). I was wondering if any of you had heard likewise and could expand on it.

Oddly enough, since I saw SD in 1997, I call the days between 27-31. December "Strange days".
Seems it has affected me in some way.

eh, it was ok but nothing compared to blade runner. Perhaps that is just the inherent bias talking,

i have had this vision of the perfect Scifi movie for sometime now and BR is the only one to come close. Perhaps I just need to become a director.

Wasn't 'Strange Days' a working title for Blade Runner, for a while there?

I think Gattaca was the Blade Runner of the 90s. Good SF movies are as rare as meteors hitting Earth.

Or was it Minority Report?
But seriously, our answer to this question can obviously change from one day to the next. When I first saw Strange Days, I told some friends about it `cause I enjoyed it, but I wouldn't call it the BR of the 90's.
I guess... today anyway... I would call Gattica the THX1138 of the 90's and maybe, A.I. Artificial Intelligence the BR of the 90's.
A.I. tends to ask the viewer many of the same questions as BR.
