i highly agree with Gene Ettix, AI is definitely the BR of today, although i havent seen dangerous days. (BTW, i recently got AI on dvd. now i just need the minority report again)

gattaca would be the THX1138 of today i would think (ive heard equilibrium was like the book "brave new world" which is obviously what inspired THX1138 (THX-1138:4EEB) so maybe equilibrium?)

I don't get this either. I thought we were talking about how well made and how important the movie to the genre is. What's this with A.I.?
If Blade Runner is the 2001 of the 80s, then how could this mean that A.I. is the Blade Runner of the 90s? Why compare a mediocre Spielberg to first-rate classics like 2001 and Blade Runner. If someone asks me what is the Space Odyssey of the 90s I don't go looking for similar storylines. No, I'll be looking for the most important SF movie of that decade. And that sure ain't A.I.

Gee Leon, put yer Blaster away :? Sorry I upset you but, I was only commenting on the original post about Strange Days and was taking it much more light-heartedly. Besides... I mentioned that, from one day to the next, I might feel differently on this subject (just as you yourself said Gattica one day,and Matrix the next.) I was only having fun and am entitled to my opinion as well as everyone here. To be honest... I was a bit worried my mentioning of A.I. may bother someone, as this film tends to be written-off by many of us here as stylized Spielberg crap. Personally, I wish Kubrik could have created it w/out him but, for me it's still "dark" and intrigueing. IMHO... under-rated as Matrix is over-rated. I like The Matrix alot but don't feel it's any more important a film than A.I. albeit much more popular. And both films are definitely as important as Strange Days... wouldn't you agree?
Anyway - we struck-up some good conversation for this thread as,when it really comes down to it... Blade Runner and 2001 are in a catagory by themselves and at this point in time, nothing has even entered the same ballpark IMO. Well, maybe THX1138... (uh oh... am I in trouble again?

I wouldn't know,Leon... Haven't seen I,Robot... but it sure looks like typical "HOLLYWOOD" to me. OMG-Will Smith
Anyhoo... Did you even read my last post? Let's put these pointless speculations to rest. Really, it's unimportant and I'd rather spend my sucky typing on other things actually

Of course I read your last post. My I, Robot post was a deliberate continuation of my so-called "worked up" post, which I actually though was pretty relaxed (hey, I didn't even bring my blaster, really). Didn't you see the winkie? Anyhoo, I don't think THX 1138 belongs in that "list" either. For you see, 2001 and Blade Runner are milestones and their influence on other movies is quite evident. Heck, BR is named most influential movie of the 80s on many occasions. That's why I considered "The Matrix" as the BR of the 90s. I don't think A.I. or Minority Report have a strong and unique enough identity for being the new Blade Runners. But in the end, yes, you're probably right when you say 2001 and BR are in a league of their own.

It's all good, man. No problem. I did see your smiley, but I felt your mentioning of I,Robot was sarcastic and knew you weren't about to "let it go",so to speak, because you won't even consider any of my casual film suggestions.
So... since I won't let it go either... I'd like to say that my mentioning of THX1138 at the end of that post was meant to be a friendly joke and maybe razz you a bit, which it did obviously  But now that I really think about it... if THX doesn't influence directors anymore than Matrix, in my opinion... it should.
Also, my mention of Minority Report was a bit tongue-in-cheek as well, really. Only to show it's a neverending subject.(you'll notice in some old posts that I actually enjoyed a smaller PKD-based film,"Imposter" more than MR)
Anyway... it's a moot point and we all have different opinions. When we're old and grey, many films will have influenced what we're watching... movies are a dime-a-dozen,right?And once again... I think I'm pretty safe to say that the majority of us here haven't seen another 2001 or BR yet.
Still friends? :) Actually, we are not having a disagreement... we're having a discussion.

I agree that BR and 2001 are on a league of their own, but in my opinion they do share in common the fact that they were both films that stand out in their own decades (60?s & 80?s) as THE definitive sci-fi film that embodied all aspects visual artistry, depth, scope, and ?human? emotion.

In that case, I?d like to nominate Ghost in the Shell (1995) as THE sci-fi film of the 90?s (or at least in the top three). Sure, it?s an animated film, but I really can?t think of any other sci-fi movie from the 90?s that shares the same core elements that made BR and 2001 such wonderful films on so many levels.

Now as for THE movie for the new millennium decade, I don?t think we?ve seen this kind of sci-fi film yet, but we still have 6 more year to go.

Anyway, that my 2 cents.
