BR getting more promotions

a few nights ago on TechTV's "the screensavers", they showed a new "geek library" segment, in which they revealed a new movie they are adding to their geek library. the movie revealed: Blade Runner DC.

http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/supe ... 27,00.html

the full notes on the show arent in that article (they should've been). so here's a brief summary: Sarah Lane and Kevin Rose one night watched blade runner. on the show, the give a basic plot summary and backstory, explaining how deackard might be a replicant himself (kevin rose saw no sign or hint of this in the movie). the explain the difference between the original version everyone saw and the director's cut.

that's about all. they go into no detail about how amazing the SFX were for its time, and how much of a visionary R. Scott was. but in all, it's nice to see Blade Runner actually recognized somwhere. after all, it was one of the influences to the matrix.

Checked out your link and totally agree. Nice to see also that Brazil gets a page. Not sure if I want to be classed as a 'geek' even if I am. Or is it a form of flattery?

I stopped watching Screensaver's after leo got shitcanned. I can't stand Kevin and Patrick is floundering without Leo.

I realize it is shallow to stop watching because one of the hosts left, but I can't get interested listening to those guys.

But it is still nice to see BR get some more well deserved attention.

i kinda quit watching too. just whenever i have nothing better to do ill catch an episode (by the way, kevin rose hated the movie, says Sarah Lane)

and i also forgot. two weeks ago was robot week. each of the crew members chose their top 3 robots. it was the typical R2-D2/C-3PO and johnny 5, except for Patryk norton. Patryk Norton chose r2-d2, ROY BATTY, and (forgot the 3rd). it's nice to see a Blade runner character chosen for one of the top robots on robot week.

another TechTV article

"Blade Runner Plot Summary [from IMDb]:

Deckard is a Blade Runner, a police man of the future who hunts down and terminates replicants, artificially created humans. He wants to get out of the force, but is drawn back in when 5 "skin jobs", a slang term for replicants, hijack a ship back to Earth. The city that Deckard must search for his prey is a huge, sprawling, bleak vision of the future. This film questions what it is to be human, and why life is so precious.

Ok, let me start off by saying that I understand this is a Sci-Fi classic. And I understand that when it was released back in 1982 it was probably very realistic and the 5th element of it's time.. That being said I never got a chance to watch it back in 1982 - therefore my take on this movie is a bit skewed.

What I liked: The plot was cool, the costumes and makeup work was amazing. Seeing a youthful Indiana Jones'esk Harrison Ford was cool.

What I disliked: The ending. Some guy with bleached blonde hair running around half naked beating on his chest just left me with a bad 80's B movie taste in my mouth.

I give it 2.5/3 out of 5 stars. Let the flames begin ; )"

I read the link you supplied THX1138 and was very tempted, for the first time in my life, to send an email hate-mail. Perhaps this guy should stick to looking up his own arse because he obviously cannot see much further.
Please re-assure me this site is not too well read by the populace of the net!

The fact that not everybody gets this movie is one of the reasons I like it soo much. I didn't like it the first time I saw it either.Still It haunted me, and after watching it again I started to get it. So I could care less about those that don't...there is hope for them yet.

Critics nower days like it very much, calling it a classic and so forth. Blade Runner is however very much an intellectual movie, let there be no doubt about it. That's why so many were disappointed by it. They expected a nice popcorn ride (and they didn't get one). They expected Harrison Ford to slaughter robots for about 2 hours long and an all mighty explosion in the end. They didn't get that either. Most people just didn't get it. Especially in the States (1982) they didn't get it. In Europe critics and audiences were a lot milder towards the film. Just stating facts here, don't shoot the messenger.

good point. they thought they were going to get a straightofrward movie that is self-explanitory. instead, they got a movie that really makes you think, and brings up good moral thoughts. they expected a slaughter film, they got a mercy film where a bounty hunter hates his job.

I know this might sound like heresy but I was wondering if Blade Runner suffered from the way in which it was promoted and I am specifically refering to the type of artwork used on the posters, the painted version (normally used on the video/DVD covers) as opposed to the photographic one.
Back in 1982 (and I was there) this didn't seem to matter to me but as time has gone on might they not have found something a little more sophisticated to promote the Directors Cut? And now in 2004 the same stuff is still used to promote the boxed set etc. Now, if you're reading this forum, you will not need convincing of the merits of seeing this film. You know it, you like it, you appreciate it. But I asked myself, if I had not seen the film, would the iconography attract my attention? I would have to answer no. Which is a shame because there is a wealth of actual imagery from within the movie that could be used to promote it. Perhaps I'm getting old and cynical but I am interested to know what anyone else thinks of this.

Your post reminded me that, back in 1982, I always felt the poster wasn't on the same alignment as the movie. Actually, I thought the collage was pretty common looking. With Harrison Ford as the gunman it clearly sended the wrong message. It said, "Look how I'm gonna slaughter these annoying robots for the next two hours!" I was disappointed with it because the artwork for Ridley's previous film (Alien) was brilliant. Of course, now I'm used to the poster, but for all the people who haven't seen the film yet, I guess a new poster wouldn't be such a bad idea. How do you think the new Blade Runner poster has to look like?

I think it's a loss that they don't make beautiful painted movie posters anymore, like back in the 80s.
